According to allAfrica.com, the legal team representing the Lonmin Platinum mineworkers cannot proceed in the enquiry for want of funding.  The Massacre saw the deaths of 44 people on 16 August 2012 during a miners’ strike and a series of violent incidents between miners, security and police at a mine owned by Lonmin in the Marikana area near Rustenburg.

Government questioned

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is now calling for the South African government to step in and provide funding. IFP Secretary-General Sibongile Nkomo MP addressed the complete lack of findings on what actually happened and stressed the need to move on in order to ‘finally bring closure to this painful chapter in our history.’
He questioned why the government would begin the Farlam Commission of Enquiry but not provide the funding with which to see it through.
