The IRS is facing questions over the hire of US litigation firm Quinn Emanuel in what could be seen as an unusual move to play hardball with Microsoft over offshore tax. The firm has a contract for $2 million, raising the hackles of Microsoft which filed a complaint late last year under the Freedom of Information Act related to the IRS contract with the firm. Politico Magazine says that the IRS may be seeking to avoid a major legal loss in a similar case the IRS fought against computer manufacturer Veritas in 2009 and that the litigation law firm could help the embattled tax regulator show that, despite the Veritas case, it is still able to both bring and win other cases.
