Modelling predictor introduced by PI law firm

London-based personal injury specialist Hodge Jones & Allen has developed a bespoke outcome predictor for its litigation cases with an academic at University College London.

Andrew Chesher, professor of economics and economic management, has based the model he created for the firm on an analysis of 600 cases spread over a year. Factors examined included claimant demographics, quality of the defendant’s solicitor and the number of witnesses. He said: ‘There are complex interactions between many of the variables we analysed and, as with many markets where human judgement is involved, there is always an element of unpredictability. However, particularly with the model predicting the likelihood of a case being won or lost, we were able to produce robust models that will improve over time as further data is collected.’
