The company estimates it is losing at least $2 million in sales each year due to the problem with around a third of its branded headphones and audio products sold online counterfeits.
The illegal products’ poor quality not only costs the company in lost sales, but also damages its reputation through poor quality, Sennheiser’s US president Greg Beebe added.
Counterfeit products
The Financial Times says that electronics manufacturers have had difficulty in quantifying the effects of counterfeit products because they are usually bought unknowingly online.
According to the report, in the US alone counterfeit consumer electronics and parts worth $104.4m were seized last year by Customs and Border Protection.
Sennhieser has begun to employ anti-counterfeit technologies in its products and packaging, helping consumers, retailers and customs agents to identify the authenticity of a product and deter those who dress up inferior parts in similar-looking wrapping.
