Shardul Amarchand starts 50-lawyer hiring spree with 70pc pay hikes

Shardul Shroff - the older of the two brothers who have now split India's leading firm, Amarchand & Mangaldas, between them - has begun recruiting in Mumbai in order to build up an office that will compete with that of his brother in the city.

The division between the two brothers - following the decision by their mother to leave all her shares in the venture in her will to Shardul last year - saw Shardul taking the Delhi base and Cyril taking Mumbai. Now Shardul has opened a new office in Mumbai and has already taken on 12 people. The aim, according to a source, is to get to 50 within the next three months. Shardul is seen as having the stronger corporate practice of the two brothers and seems intent to build upon that. It is thought that he might call his new firm Shardul Amarchand.

The same sources estimated that lawyers recruited by Shardul are earning 70% more than they were before. As well as hiring in the corporate field, Shardul is looking for talent in the areas of litigation and competition. Among the new recruits are corporate specialists Abhishek Sinha and Radhika Pereira. Source: Economic Times
