The African National Congress confirmed it would drop legal proceedings against the gallery, ending a controversial chapter in South African social history, with some arguing the incident revealed that racial tension still lurks under the surface.

The ANC claimed that the painting by Brett Murray – who is white – violated Mr Zuma’s dignity, insulted the office of the presidency and Africans more broadly.
