As the clock neared midnight, republicans were not given enough time to pass the bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, reports the Texas Tribune.
The bill would also impose restrictions on where pregnancies could be terminated, ultimately making them take place in surgical centres and doing away with abortion clinics.
Democratic victory
Senator Davis stood for nearly 13 hours reading women’s opposing views to the bill with support from pro-choice advocates cheering in the public gallery, according to BBC News.
After the filibuster was suspended, the senate floor filled with confusion and the bill was ruled too late to pass.
The legislation’s future is unknown, but for now, Democrats consider last night a victory.
