The announcement was made within hours of the newspaper losing its top policy blogger, Ezra Klein. Some routes to the Volokh bloggers will still remain free, however. Readers with a .edu or a .gov address will get through free. Others will get ten pages a month and there will be feeds via RSS, Twitter and Facebook.

The authors do not expect to make much more money but they do hope to find 'a broader audience'. However, readers may not be pleased. Scott Greenfield commented: 'Over the years, I’ve come to think of Eugene and Orin Kerr as friends. Despite our different views of the law, I’ve come to respect and appreciate their posts and the ideas they’ve brought to the table. It’s been enriching for me. And in six months, I will be shut out.'
