UK lawyers blamed for nuisance calls and text messages

Personal injury lawyers are part of the root cause of rising motor insurance premiums because their marketing techniques are helping push up the claims for whiplash injuries, according to Aviva, the UK's largest insurer.

Aviva predicts that the number of insurance claims linked to road accidents will have increased by 9% in the year to April. The insurer's calculations suggest that motorists are seeing an average rise of £93 on their policy premiums to pay for the surge in claims. The lawyers are attacked alongside fraudsters. Some are criticised for drumming up business by making cold calls and sending marketing texts. Premiums are 40% lower in France and 50% lower in Germany where lawyers play a smaller role in making these insurance claims.

Excessive

Maurice Tulloch, Aviva chief executive, said: 'We must address how to best treat the excessive number of fraudulent, exaggerated and minor whiplash claims which are driving up the cost of insurance.' Source: Daily Mail
