Ukraine urged to strengthen legal profession

The Ukrainian government is being urged to protect human rights by ending past patterns of 'undue interference with the operation of the legal profession'.

Reports from the International Commission of Jurists and the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe suggest that recent reforms of the profession have been 'used to bring the new bar association [created through the reforms] under state control', according to the group Lawyers for Lawyers. The Commission's report said the implementation of the reforms 'led to the use of powers of public authorities for inappropriate purposes'. Source: Lawyers for Lawyers
