US real estate investment firm KHP Capital Partners has announced that former Goodwin Procter lawyer Alex Lewis has joined as general counsel, replacing Judy Miles who has stepped down to become as an executive advisor to the business.

Lewis was a partner in Goodwin’s Boston office focusing on a range of commercial real estate transactions, including equity investments, financings, acquisitions and sales. At KHP, she will be responsible for providing legal and strategic support to the firm’s funds and overseeing all legal, regulatory, risk management and compliance matters.

San Francisco-based KHP is a real estate-focused private equity firm that specialises in lifestyle hotels and resorts. It has $1bn of assets under management.

Ben Rowe, managing partner of KHP, said: “[Lewis’s] legal expertise, integrity and commitment to excellence align perfectly with our firm’s values. As we continue to expand and pursue new investment opportunities, Alex’s insight and leadership will be instrumental in enhancing our operations and supporting our long-term growth.”

Lewis spent nine years at Goodwin, including five as partner, before joining KHP. Prior to her time at Goodwin, she spent close to three and a half years as an associate at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton in New York.

She said: “I’m excited and honoured to join the leadership team at KHP. The firm’s vision and growth in the hospitality private equity space are truly inspiring, and I’m eager to contribute to its continued success.”

Miles, meantime, steps down from the GC role after 10 years at KHP. She was previously GC at Klimpton Hotels & Restaurants, her first in-house role. She also worked in private practice for 17 years at defunct firm Heller Ehrman and seven years at defunct firm Pettit & Martin, where she started her career in 1984.

Last month, Switzerland-based investment fund KKCG hired Clifford Chance partner David Koláček as group chief legal officer, a newly created role.

In March, US alternative asset manager TPG hired Jennifer Chu as CLO, replacing Bradford Berenson, who is retiring later this year.

And in January, US private equity firm AE Industrial hired McDermott Will & Emery partner Matthew Friendly as its first GC.
