In a sign of the times, the Virginia Bar has come up with a rule to protect clients from warring partners in the event of a law firm breakup or the departure of their lawyer to a different firm.The regulatory body has made the move to prevent clients being caught up in acrimonious situations and ensure they are given reasonable notice of the changes in their representation. Under the new regime, the departing lawyer is now allowed to contact the client unless there is failure to agree a joint communication. The report, from Bloomberg, says the issue has perturbed the legal profession for a long time. Lawyers have until 14 February 2014 to comment on the proposed ruling. Source: Bloomberg
