Washington State opens door to legal technicians as law firm owners

Legal technicians have been given the right to become owners of law firms in one of the most pro-technician states in the US - although they will not be able to supervise the work of lawyers or direct the professional judgement of lawyers.

The change was made through a decision by the Washington Supreme Court on 23 March to grant a petition from the bar. Explaining the thinking behind their application, Paula Littlewood of the Washington State Bar Association said that the legal profession is 'on the bleeding edge of [a] paradigm shift'.

No supervision needed

The state already allows legal technicians to prepare documents with clients for litigation and to give legal advice without being supervised by a lawyer. Source: ABA
