Weil Gotshal & Manges has hired a trio of IP partners from Latham & Watkins to continue building out its technology litigation capabilities in the US.

The incoming team are Doug Lumish, Jeff Homrig and Gabe Gross, with Lumish and Gross to split their time between the firm’s Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices, while Homrig will be based in Texas. Lumish and Homrig – who both return to Weil where they started their legal careers – will co-head the firm’s IP, technology and science litigation practice.

The trio are all highly regarded IP trial lawyers, with extensive experience advising clients on bet-the-company litigation matters in areas such as high tech, biotech, life sciences and AI.

Barry Wolf, Weil’s executive partner, said: “We know Doug and Jeff well from their previous work at Weil and are delighted to welcome them and Gabe as leaders in the field as we continue to expand our capabilities in Texas, California and around the world. Together, they will enhance the reputation that our patent litigation group has built over the years.”

Lumish arrives after 12 years at Latham where he was the Bay Area local department chair for its trial and litigation department. Prior to that he was head of IP litigation at Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman for just over two years, having previously spent 15 years at Weil.

Homrig has followed the same career path as Lumish, joining from Latham after 12 years where he was vice chair of IP litigation. He also spent just over two years at Kasowitz, having started his career at Weil in 2001, where he spent a decade.

Gross, meanwhile, also follows Lumish and Homrig from Latham and Kasowitz, which he joined from Quinn Emanuel in 2012. He also had spells at legacy firm Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek and Godfrey & Kahn, where he started his legal career.

David Lender, co-chair of Weil’s global litigation department, said: “With this elite team on board, we have a rare opportunity to overtake our competitors and better serve our clients across a broad range of patent, trade secret and other technology and life science-focused engagements.”

He added: “All are first-class trial lawyers who can run cases start to finish, or step in to lead the highest leverage situations.”

Earlier this week, Cozen O’Connor hired an IP litigation team from Eversheds Sutherland for its planned San Diego office opening. While at the start of July, Crowell & Moring hired an 18-strong IP team from Dentons in London to bolster its Unified Patent Court capabilities in Europe.
