Cleary partner hailed by Financial Times on government debt

Lee Buchheit, New York-based partner in Cleary Gottlieb has been described by the FT as 'the lawyer virtually every government turns to for advice on restructuring debt when the money runs out'.

Greece crisis

The newspaper says that 'no one has worked with as many countries in distress' as he has done. He is quoted as saying: 'They all realised far too late the extent of their problems. And when they did it was too late to arrange an orderly readjustment of the debts.' He was involved in the Greek debt reconstructuring.

European debt concern

The Times of Israel recently called him 'a man who probably knows more about sovereign debt than anyone else alive', when quoting his concerns about levels of state debt in Europe. He joined Cleary in 1976 and became a partner in 1984. He is also a member of Iceland's taskforce on the removal of capital controls. He was recently quoted as saying that Iceland would like to remove capital controls early in 2015. Source: Financial Times
