Hackers have breached most BigLaw barriers, says FBI

Virtually all of the top US law firms have been subject to data breaches, according to an unnamed FBI agent in discussion with a lawyer from Washington DC-based Steptoe & Johnson.

Stewart Baker, a Steptoe & Johnson partner, having discussed the issue with the agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, believes that other statistics - suggesting that 80 per cent of the Top US 100 have been hacked - are understating the problem. The 80 per cent statistic comes from data security software company Digital Guardian. Other research from Cisco Systems says that law practices are the seventh most vulnerable industry as regards malware in the US. The research is contained in its Annual Security Report.
