Lawyer sacked for calling Liverpool FC fans 'scouse scum' lands new job

Chelsea fan Clive O'Connell, a high-flying City lawyer, left law firm Goldberg Segalla after branding Liverpool FC fans 'scouse scum' during a hot-tempered YouTube interview and has since landed a new job at London law firm McCarthy Denning.

Mr O’Connell was shown the door after his appearance on online football channel Neeks Sports last October, during which he referred to Liverpool fans as ‘scum scouse idiots’ and ‘nasty horrible people’ in a foul-mouthed tirade that followed Chelsea’s defeat by Liverpool. The video has been watched almost 300,000 times.

‘Inconsistent with our ethos’

Rick Cohen, Goldberg Segalla’s senior partner, took to YouTube within a week to reveal that Mr O’Connell, an insurance specialist and former partner in the London office of the New York-based firm, had been dismissed. He described Mr O’Connell’s comments as ‘entirely inconsistent with our ethos. His words are offensive, plain and simple.’

New role

However, it seems that Mr O’Connell has found a new role at London-based McCarthy Denning. The firm has 19 solicitors across two offices, in comparison to Goldberg Segalla’s 265 lawyers across 17 offices, and covers a wide range of practice areas, including Mr O’Connell’s specialisms of insurance and reinsurance.

Speaking about his new job, Mr O’Connell said: ‘I am delighted to have joined McCarthy Denning … It gives me the opportunity to work closely with clients and to provide my expertise and experience in a cost effective and focused way.’ Sources: Legal Cheek; Liverpool Echo
