The proposals, which include doubling fees in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber and introducing fees to the property, tax and general regulatory chambers, would raise a further £48m per year in income for the courts. The maximum fee for money claims would be increased from £10,000 to at least £20,000. Before March this year, the highest fee for such claims was £1,515. The Law Society has claimed the latest proposals would impact individuals and small businesses - from those filing for divorce to landlords with claims against tenants.
