US lawyers average 5.4 years in post as employers rate flight risk

Credit Suisse and Wal-Mart are among the employers which are so keen to retain staff that they are monitoring the exit stats and consulting experts who can tell them which kinds of workers are likely to leave early.

The average length of stay for all workers is 4.6 years but this rises among managers (6.3 years) and professionals. The latest data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (published in 2014) shows lawyers lasting 5.4 years - slightly higher than the 5.3 average for 'professional and related occupations'.

Sports

The longest tenures in the sector are in 'architecture and engineering' (6.4) and 'education, training and library occupations' (6.2). The lawyers come next, followed by 'healthcare practitioners and technical opticians'. Those with the shortest tenures in the professional sector are those in 'arts, design, entertainment, sports and media occupations' (3.4 years). Source: ABA
