Cars.com has hired a new chief legal officer ahead of its spin-off from parent company Tegna Digital next year. Jim Rogers is joining the online car retailer as CLO after leaving his role as general counsel and senior vice president of Orbitz Worldwide last year when it was taken over by Expedia. A lawyer at Latham & Watkins for more than 30 years prior to moving in-house in 2010, Mr Rogers has held a senior legal role at the surgery company TLC Vision before joining Orbitz: ‘I decided I really like this GC business,’ he said of his new role. ‘Being in-house is a lot more fun.’

SurveyMonkey general counsel and corporate secretary Eleanor Lacey is leaving the Palo Alto-based online survey company to head up the legal department and global security firm Sophos. She will commence in the new role on 21 November, reporting directly to Sophos chief executive Kris Hagerman – a former colleague of Ms Lacey’s when she served as GC at software company Corel between 2009 and 2012. Former Sophos GC Ari Buchler left the company after three years at the helm of its legal department on 14 October for reasons still unconfirmed by Sophos.

Current assistant general counsel Steven Fivel has been promoted to the helm of the legal department at global shopping mall developer Simon Property Group. Mr Fivel will assume his new position at the end of this year when current GC James Barkley retires after almost four decades with the company. Mr Fivel himself rejoined the Fortune 500 developer in 2011 after serving an interim period as EVP, GC and secretary at wireless device distributor Brightpoint. Current senior deputy GC Alexander Snyder will take over from Mr Fivel when he assumes his new role on 1 January.

Renewable energy group Northern Power Systems has recruited June Morris as its new vice president and general counsel. An attorney for more than thirty years, Ms Morris has extensive experience providing legal leadership at public companies and will play a key role advising on Northern Power’s business strategy moving forward. She has previously held GC roles at Pegasystems, Sequoia Systems and CGI Information Systems.

Finally, the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has appointed John Coleman as the new deputy general counsel for litigation and oversight. Mr Coleman has been with the regulator since 2010, serving as assistant general counsel for litigation and as a senior litigation counsel. Also appointed this week is Sonya White, who is taking on the role of deputy general counsel for general law and ethics.
