Farmer-owned cooperative gets new general counsel, while United Airlines onboards new legal head.

Tom Griffin has been appointed general counsel and company secretary at Lakeland Dairies, a farmer-owned dairy processing co-operative with operations across 15 counties on a cross-border basis in Ireland. Mr Griffin is an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer, having worked most recently as a corporate commercial solicitor with AIB Bank for over seven years. Prior to this, he was a solicitor with KPMG’s corporate legal advisory department, specialising in corporate, commercial and employment law.

Green Mountain Care Board has appointed Michael Barber as general counsel. He will assume the role immediately and replaces Judy Henkin, who was recently appointed to serve as the deputy commissioner of the Vermont Department of Corrections. Mr Barber has been with the Green Mountain Care Board since October 2016. Prior to his work at the board, he was an assistant attorney general for the State of Vermont.

Clearly Clean Products has appointed Dr Gary D Colby as general counsel. He will head Clearly Clean's legal operations and take the lead in securing, licensing, and enforcing the organization's intellectual property (IP) rights. Dr Colby joins Clearly Clean after more than two decades working as an IP attorney in private practice. Prior to his legal career, Dr Colby was trained as a chemical engineer and earned a doctorate for his research on an industrial renewable energy process. 

United Airlines named veteran transportation industry attorney Robert S Rivkin as its new senior vice president and general counsel. Mr Rivkin will report to Brett J Hart, the airline’s chief administrative officer and executive VP, who has also served as its general counsel since May 2017. Mr  Rivkin’s previous roles include deputy general counsel for Delta Air Lines from 2013 to 2016, and GC at the U.S. Department of Transportation from 2009 to 2013.

Houston-based energy infrastructure company Kinder Morgan has appointed a new general counsel, following the death of the incumbent. Catherine James replaces the late James Curtis Moffatt as the permanent general counsel. Mr Moffat died last December.

Patrick Fraizer, the general counsel of Pan-American Life Insurance Group (PALIG), is to retire and will be succeeded by his deputy, Jose Corrada. New Orleans-based PALIG is promoting deputy general counsel Jose Corrada to senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. He will assume his new role on March 31 when Mr Fraizer retires. Mr Corrada joined PALIG in 2008 as associate general counsel and last year was promoted to the position of deputy general counsel. Before joining the company, he served as associate counsel for Peoples Health in Metairie, Louisiana.

Also in the insurance business, AmTrust Title Insurance Company has promoted Felice Shapiro to become the general counsel for AmTrust Title and First Nationwide Title. Ms Shapiro takes responsible for all underwriting decisions for both companies. The company note she is one of the first female general counsel of a major title insurance underwriter. Ms Shapiro served most recently as executive vice president and chief underwriter for AmTrust Title and was responsible for overseeing all legal and underwriting decisions for the direct and agency sides of the business. Before joining AmTrust Title in January 2016, she was executive director and counsel of TIRSA, a rating agency for title insurance.
