More GCs than ever seek non-executive board roles

GCs are actively considering joining the boardroom, preferably in another company.

More general counsel than ever are seeking to join boards as non-executive directors. More than one in four have expressed an interest in being appointed to a board of another company whilst 13 per cent said they would like to be a director on the board of their own company. According to the GC Excellence research, With 12 per cent already sitting on the board of their companies, only six per cent said they had no interest in a board position whilst eight per cent said they were actively seeking a position on a board.

Governance

The report also revealed expectations that the presence of lawyers on the board would lead to an improvement in internal governance with 88 per cent believing this would be the case and 78 per cent saying it would inmprove corporate governance. Nearly 70 per cent said the presence of a lawyer would encourage lower levels of risk-taking.
