Australian firms gear up for multi-billion energy disputes due to last years

Norton Rose Fulbright and Corrs Chambers Westgarth are said to have been building teams for two years to handle a series of disputes in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry that are expected to last years and involve 'mind blowing' sums.

Experts are predicting law and accountancy firms to be heavily involved in apportioning costs for over-runs when seven giant LNG projects - worth US$193b together - reach completion in the next two years. LNG plants built for Chevron, Santos and Inpex Corporation are already said to be the subject of disputes. 'The numbers are mind blowing,' said Owain Stone, a forensic expert at KordaMentha.

A bed-load of work

One legal source said: 'This will create a bed-load of work for those with the right expertise that will last several years.' Corrs has taken on two leading infrastructure litigation lawyers, Andrew Stephenson and Michael Earwaker, to handle this kind of dispute. Norton Rose has been embedded in the LNG project teams of its clients, helping them to control costs. Source: Financial Review
