Dentons links up with IBM to push ahead on legal IT research

NextLaw Labs, the Dentons IT research arm, is working with IBM on a joint technology platform which will allow rapid testing and development of new legal apps by specialist start-ups.

Joe Andrew, chair of Dentons, said: 'This is an important moment in our profession. Joining the world’s largest law firm with the world’s leading technology provider is just one of the ways that NextLaw Labs is working to transform the legal industry.'

Start-ups which take this route will have access to the IBM platform Bluemix, which has over 100 tools and services built into it. It is described by Dentons as 'the largest cloud foundry deployment in the world'. Dentons has also signed a deal with ROSS Intelligence through which ROSS can use Dentons to test and develop tools for speeding up research by lawyers. Dentons explained the ROSS research by saying that 'lawyers ask ROSS their research question in natural language, as they would a person, then ROSS reads through the law, gathers evidence, draws inferences and returns an evidence-based answer'.
