Indian law firms see upturn in environmental work

While the level of new investment has fallen in India over the last three years, lawyers are seeing an increase in demand for environment lawyers to rescue businesses from pollution penalties.

The country’s National Green Tribunal, set up in 2010, has been carrying out numerous environment impact assessment studies and requiring businesses to clear up polluted areas. Ranjit Prakash of HSA Advocates said that businesses are looking at environmental issues now before they begin projects: ‘Now, companies are involving lawyers right from inception. Lawyers are involved in drafting contracts and doing due diligence. They are checking whether the company is compliant with the Environment Protection Act and the Forest Conservation Act before they start the project.’ Boutique environmental firms have been set up, including Trust Legal and Enviro Legal Defence.
