Law firm spilt fuels race to recruit staff in India

The split in Amarchand & Mangaldas - to create two separate firms run by each of the two Shroff brothers - has provoked a race to build up new teams on both sides, making the recruitment market the busiest it has been in five years.

One side of the split firm, that run by Cyril Shroff wants vast expansion. At the moment, the combined firms runs to a headcount of 655 lawyers. But Vandana Shroff, wife of Cyril, said: 'Our vision is to build a 1,000-people firm.' Bithika Anand, chief executive of Legal League Consulting, said: 'We have not seen so much movement in the industry in the last five years. The split has galvanised the market, presenting opportunities for aspiring and performing lawyers'. 

Mother's legacy

The two brothers announced their split in January. Their estrangement relates to the death of their mother in 2014. She left all of her share in the practice to the older brother Shardul. Source: Business Standard
