Weil back in profit as US firms start results season

Weil, Gotshal & Manges has shown a 16.5 per cent rise in profits per equity partner in 2014 after showing falls of seven per cent and five per cent in the previous two years.

The firm, badly hit by a fall in bankruptcy business (especially in its Lehman Brothers work) had to make difficult decisions - including sacking 60 associates. The firm is aiming to grow again this year.

Executive partner Barry Wolf told Legal Business: 'There was a strong transactional market in 2014 and we were top-five for the M&A completed deals league tables. Our litigation practice improved but our bankruptcy practice remains slow. All this together meant more production.' Source: Legal Business
