The BSB found that a series of tweets sent out by barrister Ian Millard in November 2014 were ‘seriously offensive’ and likely to diminish public trust in the legal profession. Mr Millard’s Twitter account, which makes clear that he is a barrister, was used to send out a diatribe against Jews, Muslims, pro-Zionists, black people, Asian people and what Mr Millard refers to as ‘chavs’, as well as images that appear to support and idealise Hitler and the Nazi Party. One tweet criticised the media for failing to reveal that ‘sheer fakery’ of the Holocaust, while another read: ‘“Hitler considered that a Jewish homeland would be a threat to humanity” [Deborah Lipstadt, notorious Jew-Zionist, on CNN] He was right!’
Incompatible with professional standards
Mr Millard is an unregistered barrister who has held a practicing certificate since 2007. Announcing the decision to disbar him, BSB director of professional conduct Sarah Jagger noted: ‘The use of such offensive language is incompatible with the standards expected of barristers. The Tribunal rightly found that such behaviour diminished the trust and confidence the public places in the profession and the decision to disbar Mr Millard reflects this.’ Mr Millard has since retaken to Twitter to blame a biased and ‘sensationalist’ media for one-sided coverage of his disbarment and to post anti-Semitic imagery referencing Jewish media ownership.
