'Sophisticated' GCs push up value from law firms

Recent trends to get better value for money are partly due to the arrival of a generation of more sophisticated in-house counsel, according to lawyers quoted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Today’s GCs are ‘very well-educated, savvy consumers of legal services and that’s driving a lot of the demand for efficiency’, according to John C Ryan of Duane Morris, formerly deputy GC at Aramark Corp. One of the biggest difficulties that comes out of law firm-GC relationships, he added, was the large bill sent out unexpectedly. He said: ‘Surprises are very difficult to deal with and it’s the last thing [in-house lawyers] want. That can both really sour a relationship and really show you don’t understand the challenges a GC faces.’ It could also reflect badly on the in-house legal team who would need to present that bill to colleagues in the finance department.
