African lawyers need to step up to the plate when it comes to illegal outflows of money from the continent, the former South African President Thabo Mbeki has told a group of lawyers.
The President, who is head of the Economic Commission for Africa- African Union High-level Panel (HLP) on Illegal Financial Outflows from Africa, told lawyers at the Pan African Lawyers Union that they need strike a balance between the interests of clients and their country.
With Africa currently losing $US50m, a panel at the event pointed out that the stolen funds came in the form of kickbacks and corruption of civil servants, drug and money trafficking and money laundering and tax evasion to name a few examples.
The report by the panel will be released at the next African Union Summit from 20 to 27 June. Source: AllAfrica.com
