Jersey-based AI dispute intelligence start-up Aavalynx, founded three years ago by former Quinn Emanuel of counsel Hanna Roos, has secured £1.5m in a pre-seed funding round.

The round was led by investment firm European Omega Ventures, alongside early-stage technology financier Two Ravens, while prominent angel investors including senior law firm partners also participated.

Aavalynx deploys AI to help in-house lawyers, their legal advisers and funders manage lawsuits and other legal disputes more efficiently, ensuring that cases are resolved swiftly. Its flagship product Sisu performs like an AI assistant for disputes such as arbitration, locating key evidence and spotting emerging risks from case overviews.

The firm says that it has also built the first risk and capital management system for business and legal leaders to manage and optimise dispute exposures in real time.

Aavalynx claims the return on investment from its offerings is 30-fold when measured against saved damages, legal fees and interest. It says this jumps to 200-fold when rescued commercial opportunities are taken into account.

Roos, founder and CEO, said: “Current AI tools by and large improve lawyer efficiency. But efficiency is not good enough. Generic LLM models cannot address the unique complexities of a sector like dispute resolution. The fact is that good tools make disputes efficient, but great ones make them disappear. Even affirmative litigation, for a tech company pushing licence fees, should be as short and impactful as possible.”

Birgir Ragnarsson, a founding partner at Omega Ventures, said: “There is a lot of noise in the legal AI space, and much of this activity has focused on improving productivity within legal teams. Aavalynx is built around a more impactful premise: that the primary challenge for large organisations is not efficiency alone, but the ability to understand and manage disputes as a financial risk.”

Aavalynx, which counts Vodafone as one of its co-development partners, says corporate legal services account for a large portion of the $1.15tn global legal services market and estimates that around 30% of external legal spending is on litigation.

As well as running Aavalynx, Roos is also CEO of London-based dispute resolution boutique Aavagard, which she founded in 2022. Prior to launching the firm, she spent almost three years as of counsel at Quinn Emanuel and nearly five years as a senior associate at Latham & Watkins.

Last month, Legora agreed to acquire UK AI litigation intelligence start-up Wexler.
