US firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has hired a pair of partners in Chicago from Mayer Brown to strengthen its M&A and real estate funds practices and expand its footprint in the Windy City.

The incoming duo include M&A partner Joshua La Vigne and investment management partner Jessica Pan. La Vigne brings transactions experience, including divestitures, joint ventures and corporate governance matters across a range of industries, with a particular focus on infrastructure. Pan’s practice focuses on advising real estate and private equity fund sponsors on fund formation, management and compliance.

Abid Qureshi, Akin’s co-chair, said: “Joshua and Jessica are terrific additions to our M&A and real estate funds practices. They have advised sophisticated sponsors in complex fund structuring matters and investors and strategics in global transactions, and our clients will benefit from their impressive track records and understanding of the market.”

La Vigne arrives after just under a decade at Mayer Brown, which he joined as an associate in 2015 and then made partner in January last year.

Pan, meanwhile, arrives after four-and-a-half years at Mayer Brown, where she was a counsel. Prior to that she spent eight years as an associate at Proskauer Rose and three years at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.

The duo’s arrival follows in the footsteps of two fellow former Mayer Brown lawyers – investment management partner Wendy Dodson Gallegos and infrastructure M&A partner Jason Wagenmaker – who joined last month as part of Akin’s plans to launch in Chicago.

Zachary Wittenberg, corporate practice co-head, said: “We are excited to continue growing our team with strong lawyers like Joshua and Jessica, adding a wealth of experience and depth to our practices, advising clients on their most significant fundraising and M&A transactions. Along with Jason and Wendy, they enhance our premier M&A and investment management groups, and we are delighted to welcome them to the firm.”

In April, Mayer Brown also lost a pair of energy and infrastructure partners – Paul Astolfi and Katy McNeil – to A&O Shearman for its Chicago debut. And in February, UK firm gunnercooke hired a five-partner team from FisherBroyles for its Chicago launch.
