Hearst appoints a dynamic duo to co-lead legal function with new team promotions, while Arizona's Benchmark Electronics leave it to Beaver.

Hearst has announced a dynamic duo and a round of new team promotions. Mark Redman and Jonathan Donnellan have been named vice presidents and co-general counsels of the American media company. They previously served as deputy general counsels since May 2011. Commenting on the announcement, Eve Burton, senior vice president and chief legal officer, said ‘both are trusted advisors to our business leaders. Reflecting the new model we have built, they will share responsibility for day-to-day management of the Office of General Counsel and continue their active M&A practices and litigation.’ Mr Redman, a former director of legal affairs for SmartMoney magazine, has overseen corporate legal matters company-wide since joining Hearst as counsel in 2003. Mr Donnellan joined Hearst as senior counsel in 2003 and has been responsible for all litigation and content-related legal matters company-wide, having previously been vice president and deputy general counsel at the New York Daily News. In other office of general counsel promotions, Jack Spizz, Ravi SitwalaKenan Packman, Maureen Sheehan and Kristina Findikyan were named associate general counsels; Carolene Eaddy and Jennifer Tancredi were promoted to senior counsels; and Monika Jedrzejowska was named chief privacy officer.

The BT former group general counsel Dan Fitz is to take up a new role at The Francis Crick Institute, a London-based biomedical research centre.  Mt Fitz said he is 'looking forward to being more hands on.’ He’ll need to be hands on, he last team was 500 strong, while the institute has a four-strong legal department. His move will take effect from 1 November, after a more than eight-year tenure at BT, most of which was spent as group general counsel. Mr Fitz stepped down in April this year and was replaced by former AB Inbev general counsel Sabine Chalmers.

enet, Ireland’s largest open-access network provider, announced the appointment of Claire M Murphy as the group general counsel & company secretary. In her role, Ms Murphy has responsibility for all legal workstreams for the group, as well as corporate governance matters.  In addition to her role as general counsel and company secretary, she also assumes the title of head of shared services. As part of this role, Claire will have responsibility for human resources, business transformation initiatives, and regulatory matters. Ms Murphy brings 13 years’ experience in the legal profession having worked both in industry, in the utility and card payments sector, and in private practice in Ireland’s leading law firms.

Ama Romaine has been appointed general counsel at G6 Hospitality, based in Carrollton, Texas. Most recently, Ms Romaine served as general counsel for the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, where she was responsible for the lab's risk management, compliance, ethics and equal employment offices. She previously spent a decade in the hospitality industry and served as the vice president and senior counsel for brands at Hilton. Earlier in her career, Ms Romaine practiced law at top-ranked law firms in the US and Trinidad, including White & Case and M. Hamel Smith & Company.

As staff and students start to prepare for the new academic year, Villanova University has looked from within their new general counsel, appointing E Michael Zubey.  He will be taking on the title of vice president and general counsel at the Philadelphia-area university.

Peapack-Gladstone Bank has hired Heidi H Smith as a senior managing director and assistant general counsel. Working out of the bank's headquarters in Bedminster, New Jersey, Ms. Smith is responsible in assisting the general counsel in overseeing all legal affairs of the Company. An accomplished corporate attorney, Ms. Smith previously served as Legal Counsel III at Santander Bank NA, and has held positions as senior counsel at ADP, and as chief counsel, Vendor Finance Americas at CIT Group Inc.

In a post-merger move, Tate & Lyle has appointed a new general counsel as current general counsel Robert Gibber steps down after nearly 30 years at the helm of the well-known British ingredients brand. Lindsay Beardsell will take on the role of executive vice president and general counsel at Tate & Lyle from 17 September 2018.

Benchmark Electronics, a manufacturing, engineering and design corporation based in Scottsdale Arizona, has appointed Steve Beaver to head its Global Legal Function. As vice-president and general counsel, Mr Beaver will oversee global legal, compliance, ethics, intellectual property, environmental health and safety matters. He is a former software company general counsel.

Patrick Pascarella, a former chief antitrust counsel to AT&T and former US Department of Justice antitrust division counsel, has jumped the fence to join law form Kilpatrick Townsend and Stockton in Washington, DC. Mr. Pascarella’s experience ranges from antitrust litigation to representing clients before enforcement and regulatory agencies in the US as well as Mexico, Colombia, and other Latin American countries. He has counseled clients in a variety of industries including telecommunications, content and media, e-commerce, publishing, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, sports, cement, weapon systems, and ice cream.

PubMatic, the publisher-focused sell-side platform (SSP) for an open digital media future, has announced tech veteran Thomas Chow is their new general counsel and secretary. Mr Chow will oversee the company’s global corporate, commercial, intellectual property and legal affairs. Prior to joining PubMatic, he led the adtech and measurement legal group at Snap Inc. and was the general counsel, chief compliance officer and secretary at Exponential Interactive. He also held senior leadership roles at Vindicia and TechSoup. Mr Chow is located at PubMatic’s headquarters in Redwood City.

Crawford Lake Capital Management has named Dov Lando as general counsel and chief compliance officer. Previously, he worked at MKP Capital Management LLC where he was general counsel. At Crawford Lake, Mr. Lando will oversee all legal, regulatory and compliance matters, while also working with the firm’s executive committee on strategic initiatives. Prior to his six years at MKP Capital, Mr. Lando was general counsel at Arden Asset Management LLC and assistant general counsel at American International Group, beginning his career at Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP.
