The University of London has snagged the long-time general counsel of the charity Wellcome Trust as its head of legal services.
John Stewart takes the newly-created role after 17 years at the charity – which funds research to improve human and animal health -- following the retirement of Ian Budden, the university’s legal and constitutional adviser, reports The Lawyer newspaper.
A former Shearman & Sterling lawyer, Mr Stewart will be responsible for providing legal advice to the university’s management and board of trustees, particularly in contract and commercial law, intellectual property rights and trust and charities law.

Colorado ski resort operator Vail Resorts announced that Apple’s senior vice president and general counsel, Bruce Sewell, has been brought onto its board of directors and will also serve on its audit committee.
The Apple Insider website reports that Mr Sewell – a keen skier – brings experience of managing complex issues in companies growing around the globe.
Prior to joining Apple in 2009 Mr Sewell worked at technology manufacturer Intel where he led all legal and corporate affairs, as well as corporate social responsibility programs worldwide.

Minneapolis-based investment bank Piper Jaffray has appointed John Geelan as its next general counsel, secretary and leadership team member.
London-based Here is the City website reports that Mr Geelan will replace James Chosy who has accepted the position of executive vice president and general counsel at US Bancorp.
Mr Geelan is the current assistant general counsel at the firm, responsible for managing the corporate secretary function, working with the board of directors and senior management.
