Criminal law specialist Jonathan Simpson was handed a 12-month suspension by the Bar Standards Board (BSB) after being found guilty in the Southwark Crown Court in June of stalking, but has not been struck off. Formerly of London’s Charter Chambers, Mr Simpson was first called to the Bar in 1993 and was described by the BSB as being ‘of previous good character.’ In June, both Mr Simpson and his wife were found guilty of stalking a woman with whom Mr Simpson had an 18-month affair.
The court heard that the pair send the woman, who has renamed unnamed, angry and harassing letters despite warnings from police and an existing restraining order. Representing Mr Simpson, 2 Bedford Row barrister Ian Stern QC, said his client felt a ‘deep sense of shame, remorse and sorrow’ over conviction. Mr Simpson’s wife Katherine – a property law specialist and head of residential real estate at Permberton Greenish – is due to face her own disciplinary hearing before the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in February.
