BlackBerry aims at lawyers tablet market by testing device on German government

BlackBerry, a traditional favourite with lawyers, hopes to appeal to other sectors needing secure devices, with the launch of its SecuTABLET later this year - a product that is being tested for 'classified information' status in Germany.

It promises that its new tablet would be suitable for 'data that is subject to special security requirements'. The German Federal Office for Information Security is now testing it in order to see if can be given a 'classified - for official use only' security rating. The tablet is being designed by a BlackBerry subsidiary, Secusmart, which is the first -  and, so far, only - seller of mobile device management systems to be awarded a 'Full Operational Capability' certificate, enabling it to be used for US Department of Defense networks.

Up-market clientele

BlackBerry is keen to build up its strength again in the legal market. Having got off to a poor start in the tablet market with its PlayBook, BlackBerry appears to be planning to make another attempt to appeal to its up-market traditional client with the new device.
