BP dispute continues with Louisiana law firm

BP is asking a federal court to disallow a payment of US$7.9m to be made to a Louisiana law firm involved in making compensation claims in the Gulf of Mexico 2010 oil spill.

The 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill was an environmental disaster costing BP billions. Danny E Hooks

In the middle of the dispute is former FBI director Louis Freeh who has been appointed to investigate the validity of claims. He found evidence that personnel at the law firm had tried to corrupt the compensation system by dealing with a particular lawyer they knew at the staff of the claims administrator. Not only has Andry Law denied this but they have questioned Mr Freeh's fitness to judge impartially. This claim relates to his position at Kirkland & Ellis, a law firm which has represented BP on issues unrelated to the oil leak.

Conflicts denied

Mr Freeh has denied any serious or undisclosed conflicts of interest, and is urging the court to follow his recommendations. BP is also urging the court to take this line. Source: Boston.com
