BP is seeking repayments of compensation from 'a vast number' of organisations that have received money in relation to damage they suffered by the Deepwater Horizon oil leak in 2010.

It is arguing that the current system of compensation, operated by an independent administrator, is faulty and has resulted in gigantic overpayments. In its latest filing to the US District Court in New Orleans, the company said: ‘Letting these erroneous awards stand uncorrected would violate basic principles of fairness and equity.’ BP is also seeking an injunction on recipients who could have received too much compensation, an injunction that would prevent them from spending the money until it is determined whether or not they were given ‘excessive’ sums.
