The highly divisive question of Britain’s exit from the European Union is proving too much to bear for some couples who voted on opposite sides of the referendum. According to Resolution chair Nigel Shepherd, family law solicitors and firms across the United Kingdom have observed a substantial number of couples who cite differing views on Brexit as one of the reasons for their split.
The final straw
Mr Shepherd commented: ‘I suspect that was unlikely to be the sole reason [for divorce] but we have heard of cases from a number of our members. It was a divisive campaign. It pushed some couples [over the edge]. It was the last straw that made them think ‘we are really incompatible.’ A similar trend has been observed in the United States in relation to the polarising presidential contest between Hilary Clinton and now President Elect Donald Trump, according to a recent report in the New York Times.
