Businesses turn to litigation for revenue stream

More businesses are filing suits against other organisations as a way of generating income, according to Dallas-based lawyers Steckler LLP.

Lawyers from Steckler told the 2014 In-House General Counsel Summit in Dallas, Texas that ‘some of the largest verdicts are won by businesses in business cases’. These relate to a range of issues including ‘breach of contract, patent infringement or various other affirmative claims, or perhaps opt-in or opt-out claims in major class actions or anti-trust cases’. Steckler, a litigation boutique, says that corporations are taking on the role of plaintiffs as ‘an increasingly common occurrence’.

Controversial approach

Bruce Steckler, founder of the firm, said: ‘There are often good reasons for a business to bring legal claims and for the legal department to bring in revenue. It can be a controversial approach, but we work with corporate clients all the time to identify and monetize these valuable opportunities.’ Source: IT Business Net
