The Campaign for Greener Arbitration (CGA) has named two new co-chairs as part of a refresh of its global steering committee leadership.

Wagner Arbitration’s Laura Halonen and the Scottish Arbitration Centre’s Andrew Mackenzie take over the co-chair roles from Sopra Legal’s Christine Falcicchio and Covington & Burling’s Cherine Foty, who are stepping down after five years leading the CGA.

Freshfields’ Olivier André and Karen Tan of Singapore’s Maxwell Chambers have been appointed as vice-chairs.

During Falcicchio and Foty’s tenure, the duo has overseen initiatives that advanced sustainability in international arbitration, including publishing the Green Protocols, which are designed to help clients, arbitrators and counsel promote better environmental behaviour and reduce their environmental impacts.

The duo also developed the Carbon Impact Calculator, a tool to measure and mitigate emissions associated with arbitration proceedings, as well as launching surveys on the implementation of green initiatives and institutional practices to identify the challenges arbitration institutions face in their journey towards sustainability. They also drafted a model clause for corporate counsel to help reduce carbon emissions and other environmental impacts associated with managing and resolving disputes, and proposed sustainability edits to revisions of well-known arbitral rules.

Reflecting on the transition, CGA founder Lucy Greenwood said: “The CGA has transformed beyond recognition since it began life as the Green Pledge. Much of this is down to the dedication and drive shown by the global steering committee under the exceptional leadership of Christine and Cherine. The incoming leadership team can now build on the solid foundation they have created.”

Falcicchio and Foty will continue to serve on the campaign’s advisory board alongside Greenwood, A&O Shearman partner Alex Bevan, Reed Smith partner Antonia Birt, University of Cambridge academic Helin Laufer, HKIAC’s Kiran Sanghera, former general counsel Michael McIlwrath, and Pinsent Masons partner Pamela McDonald. The full board will be announced in 2026.

The Green Pledge, introduced by Greenwood in 2019, now has nearly 2,000 signatories. The new leadership team plans to focus on the practical implementation of the pledge and support for practitioners, drawing on their prior roles on the campaign’s regional and task force committees.

Mackenzie’s appointment comes as the Scottish Arbitration Centre launched a new mediation service last week to enhance its dispute resolution offering, following the publication of new mediation rules in September. The service provides a new administered mediation scheme to support businesses and organisations in Scotland and globally.

Gillian Carmichael Lemaire, who chairs the centre, having succeeded Lord Glennie in March 2025, said: “The centre’s principles on diversity, equality and sustainability are built into our new mediation rules, but much of our approach to administered mediation will be familiar to those using other mediation rules.”

Mackenzie said the rules, and associated administrative services, would “add to our offering to the market in Scotland and internationally”, alongside its arbitration rules that launched at ICCA Edinburgh in 2022.
