Private capital-focused AI-native firm Carta Law has made two senior hires to strengthen its compliance practice capabilities.
Noah Levine joins as legal director from real estate investment firm Madison International Realty. In his new role he will be responsible for leading Carta Law’s North America compliance practice.
He brings extensive experience from his time as deputy general counsel and compliance officer at Madison International Realty, as well as spells as managing director and senior compliance counsel at investment firm Angelo Gordon and compliance roles at hedge fund Two Sigma and Dune Real Estate Partners.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Karin Porstendörfer joins in Luxembourg as compliance director and head of inbound KYC, supporting asset management clients with incoming KYC and AML requests from counterparties. She brings 18 years of audit, compliance and forensic experience to Carta Law, having previously spent six years at Carne Group as head of AML/CFT.
She began her career at PwC as assistant manager of governance, risk and compliance.
Both Levine and Porstendörfer will report to Carta Law’s managing director for compliance, Patrick Daniel Squatriti.
Carta Law has also promoted two lawyers in its contracts practice. Chrystel Marincich has been moved up to managing director after two-and-a-half years with the firm. She was previously a partner at Kirkland & Ellis and practised as a transactional attorney across Tokyo, New York and London at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett.
Kenneth Howe has also been promoted to managing director of contracts for Europe and APAC, having also spent two-and-a-half-years with the firm. He was previously at Simmons & Simmons and Gowling WLG.
James Sutton, general manager of Carta Law, said the four appointments strengthen the combination of deep legal expertise and technology the firm was built around.
He added: “Noah and Karin bring first-hand experience of the compliance challenges facing sophisticated asset managers, while Chrystel and Kenny have played a major role in building our contracts practice.
“Having strong leaders on the ground in both the US and Europe will be critical as we continue to expand the way we deliver AI-enabled legal and compliance services to private capital.”
Carta Law was launched in May following parent company Carta’s agreement to buy UK alternative legal services provider Avantia, creating an AI-powered legal and compliance law firm for asset managers.
Carta Law enables private capital firms to manage their legal and compliance work within a single platform, reducing the need to hire traditional law firms for routine legal tasks.
Last month, top 20 UK firm Bird & Bird hired a quartet of lawyers from EY, including technology partner Shahin Baghaei to lead the development of the firm’s legal transformation team.
