The City of London Law Society (CLLS) and the City of London Solicitors’ Company (CLSC) have entered a three-year strategic partnership with LawCare, pledging a combined £45,000 to support mental health and workplace wellbeing across the legal profession.
Under the arrangement, the City of London Law Society will contribute £10,000 a year from 2026 to 2028, while the City of London Solicitors’ Company will provide £5,000 a year over the same period.
The organisations said the partnership would combine financial support with wider engagement across the profession, backing LawCare’s frontline services and its work on the pressures affecting lawyers and legal staff.
At the centre of the arrangement is a joint commitment to LawCare’s 25 Club, a multi-year funding initiative that supports organisations seeking to improve mental health in the legal sector and working practices. The funding is intended to help sustain LawCare’s free and confidential emotional support and its broader work with organisations on workplace culture.
The partnership will also include shared events in the City legal market, such as joint events, LawCare’s participation in senior leadership forums and co-branded insights based on the experiences of those working in law.
The announcement comes amid ongoing concern about working conditions in the profession. According to LawCare’s Life in the Law 2025 research, nearly 60% of legal professionals reported poor mental wellbeing, almost 79% said they regularly worked beyond contracted hours and more than half said they could see themselves leaving their workplace within five years.
Both City organisations said those findings underlined the need for immediate support and longer-term change.
Patrick McCann, chief executive of the City of London Law Society, said: “This partnership reflects a clear responsibility to engage with the realities of working in law, not just at a headline level but in a way that is sustained and practical. LawCare provides both direct support to individuals and a clearer understanding of the pressures that sit within the profession.
“By committing to a multi-year partnership, and working alongside the CLSC, we are supporting that work in a way that is consistent, visible and grounded in evidence. This is about contributing to a profession that can operate effectively over time, supported by the right structures and understanding.”
McCann added: “I’d encourage other legal sector organisations to find out more about, and similarly support, LawCare’s important work. We have much to learn and do.”
Peter King, chair of the charity committee of the City of London Solicitors’ Company, said the organisation was “acutely aware of the pressures” facing solicitors in City firms and in-house roles.
He added: “Our charity, which receives donations from our membership, aims to support other charities which work in areas relevant to the law and the City of London. For these reasons, we are delighted to support this partnership, and we look forward to further engagement with LawCare and CLSC for the benefit of our members and all solicitors working in the City.”
Elizabeth Rimmer, chief executive officer of LawCare, who is due to step down later this year, said: “We’re delighted to welcome CLLS as the first LawCare Leader in our 25 Club, with a £10,000 annual commitment. It’s a great example of leadership and, alongside the support from the CLSC, shows a real drive to improve mental health across the legal sector.
“Through this partnership, we can increase our impact, better support people facing the challenges of day-to-day legal practice and help build a healthier, more sustainable sector. We’d love to see more of the legal community get involved.”
Both McCann and Rimmer are judges at the Women and Diversity in Law Awards, while LawCare was formerly the nominated charity for the awards from 2023 to 2025.
