Corrs Chambers Westgarth has boosted its corporate offering in Sydney with the hire of the executive partner of leading Australian independent Gilbert + Tobin.

Tim Gordon has joined the 600-lawyer firm after 11 years as a partner at Gilbert + Tobin, where he also led the corporate advisory group and worked on deals including advising Bain Capital on the sale of Retail Zoo to Adamantem Capital and Silver Lake on investing in Australian professional football.

Corrs senior partner and CEO, Gavin MacLaren, said Gordon was “well respected in the market for his commercial and pragmatic approach”, adding he brought significant experience in M&A, capital raisings, joint ventures, corporate restructurings and regulatory investigations.

Gordon was appointed Gilbert + Tobin’s executive partner in 2023 as part of a wider leadership shake-up that also saw Danny Gilbert, who co-founded the firm in 1988, transition from managing partner to chairman and Sam Nickless, a partner and chief operating officer at the firm, become its chief executive.

At Corrs, Gordon is expected to focus on complex M&A transactions for listed companies and Australian and international private equity funds, sovereign funds, multi-platform alternative asset managers and superannuation funds.

He will be part of the firm’s well-regarded corporate practice, which is noted for its ability to handle inbound foreign investment for multinational clients and China-related mandates. The team regularly acts for domestic and international private equity firms on complex transactions and exits, and has a strong offering across heavily regulated sectors such as mining, life sciences and TMT.

Last year, a Corrs team led by public M&A partner Russell Philip advised Silver Lake Resources on its AUS$2.3bn merger with Red 5 to create Australia’s fifth-largest gold producer. More recently, the firm advised DAZN Group on its AUS$3.4bn acquisition of the Foxtel Group from Foxtel’s shareholders News Corporation and Telstra Group.

Corrs also boosted its disputes offering in June with the hire of Jo Feldman in Perth from Norton Rose Fulbright as an arbitration and commercial litigation partner and head of trade.

At the same time, the firm promoted 11 lawyers to partner, including corporate lawyer Lucy Carter in Melbourne.
