Ethics debate starts in New York after rail crash

New York lawyers have begun discussing the ethical boundaries of online marketing in the wake of the Metro-North train derailment this month in which four people died.

While approaches to affected individuals by law firms are banned for 30 days, a distinction has been made for general messages or blogs put up on the Internet. This time around at least two firms have made general statements about the legal procedures which can be followed after such accidents. The New York State Bar Association also issued a release in which its president David Schraver is quoted as saying: 'It is important for all of us in the legal community to recognize the importance of respecting the privacy of the victims and their families. The decision to retain counsel is an important one and should not be made under pressure.' Source: Gulf Times
