In the US, after a federal appeals court dismissed the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) net-neutrality rules in January, telecoms are lobbying the FCC to be able to charge select websites to deliver higher-quality content. Net neutrality is the principle that internet providers should give equal access to all internet results on the internet without discriminating. Such enforcement could hurt telecom services because the law would not distinguish between mobile and fixed internet, effectively eliminating the need for smartphone users to pay for data plans.
