Global IP firm Fish & Richardson has created a new proprietary AI patent tool to enhance patent workflows, assisting lawyers to provide robust outcomes for its clients’ IP portfolios.

FishStream AI is intended to help the Boston-based firm's patent lawyers perform tasks faster and more efficiently, integrating the firm’s enterprise grade AI with its patent and technical knowledge.

This allows its lawyers to manage higher case volumes and spend more time on legal strategy and client advice, the firm said.

Its key capabilities include highlighting potential problems and opportunities early in the review process and structuring information so lawyers can quickly understand crucial issues, identifying claim limitations.

It also proposes counterarguments or amendment options for attorney review, provides support for application drafting, summarises inventions and novel features and suggests independent claims to help attorneys assess strategy.

Fish & Richardson principal Tracy Hitt said: “FishStream AI is designed to capitalise on the experience of our IP professionals.”

“It provides a logical starting point built on our institutional knowledge and followed by a non-negotiable human-in-the-loop approach that integrates attorney experience and judgment, with a focus on delivering excellent value to clients.l"

Hitt told Law.com that work on FishStream AI began last December and that the tool had undergone beta testing since the spring, having been examined by a group of internal users.

Security is also a core feature of the tool, with safeguards in place intended to protect sensitive client information.

Last month, IP law firm Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox announced a partnership with Thomson Reuters to launch its generative AI-powered patent claim eligibility tool for law firms, following the creation of its patent drafting tool Patent Assist AI last year.

AI-patent platform Fearn also announced a $5.5m seed round led by Kindred Ventures, with participation from start-up investors a16z speedrun and the Designer Fund, alongside Essence VC.

Meanwhile this month, Swedish native AI law firm start-up Lightbringer raised $10m in a Series A funding round, to support its in-house patent attorneys. It was co-led by London-based venture capital firm 6 Degrees Capital and Dutch investment company Newion, which were joined by existing investors Luminar Ventures and Alliance VC. The round will help the start-up's expansion in the US market.

US AI patent platform start-up DeepIP also acquired German AI assistant PatentMaker, to roll out a leading AI platform in patent drafting and prosecution across Europe’s jurisdictions.
