Foreign law firms get setback in India

The ruling BJP party in India has made its first comments on the status of foreign law firms when a spokeswoman said that protection would be extended for local firms.

Meenakshi Lekhi, member of the Indian parliament and a Supreme Court advocate, said: ‘There's no surprise that India is competitive and we have gone to great lengths to protect our legal practice and lawyers. I want to extend that protection…’ She also said that Indian lawyers would need to be allowed in to work in the US if foreign law firms were to be greeted with an open door in India.
