John Wolf - who served as Rutgers University’s interim senior vice president and general counsel - announced his resignation last Thursday following  criticism for his role in advising the university’s president not to fire basketball coach Mike Rice last year after video emerged of Rice manhandling and shouting profanities at players, reports the New Jersey Star Ledger.

According to the report, Mr Wolf is the third Rutgers official to receive a large payout after resigning or getting fired in the fallout of the coaching controversy.
Officials first said that Mr Wolf had been ‘removed from his leadership post’ as a result of his involvement in the scandal. However it was later found that he was still on the payroll as a lawyer, earning the same salary he had been making as general counsel, sparking angry criticism of the university by legislative leaders. Faced with the criticism, Rutgers negotiated with Mr Wolf before announcing on Thursday he would be leaving immediately.
Under the terms of his exit, Mr Wolf will get a lump sum payout equivalent to 18 months of his $280,775 annual salary. He will also get free tickets for Scarlet Knights football games next season.
