Leading Spanish tax and legal services firm Garrigues has approved the promotion of 16 equity partners, following the conclusion of its partners’ meeting yesterday (5 February).
The firm says its latest round of promotions, which are effective from 1 January, has emphasised its focus on upgrading personnel from within; over the past 15 years, almost 60% of advancements have been sanctioned internally.
The appointments are concentrated in its offices across Spain and Portugal, and have been made in five practice areas comprising corporate and M&A, labour and employment, administrative and constitutional law, tax and conflict resolution, and litigation and arbitration.
Three of the new partners (19%) are women, a proportion that is slightly below the gender balance of the entire partnership, where the proportion of women stands at 22%, according to publicly available data tracked by Pirical.
Last year, labour and employment lawyer Rosa Zarza became the firm’s first woman senior partner.
Overall, the number of equity partners has now risen to 370, although the latest round is slightly down from the 18 who were elevated to partner status last year.
Age group balance is a key strategy as reflected in the equity partner appointments, according to Garrigues.
Alberto García Luque is now a corporate and M&A partner in the firm’s Malaga office, and has spent his entire professional career at the firm since joining it in September 2009. Miguel Hernández Ruiz is a tax partner who also joined the firm 17 years ago.
In the Vigo office, Eduardo Rodriguez Magdalena is now a tax law practice partner and has been with Garrigues for longer, joining in 2002, after he began his career at Banco Simeon – which rebranded as Banco Caixa Geral in 2006 – where he was prominent in scholarship training across many segments at the bank.
Garrigues operates in 12 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. Some 18 of its 32 offices are in Spain.
The firm was recently named the best law firm in Peru and Chile by Latin Finance at the 2025 Deals of the Year Awards and ended 2025 at the top of TTR DATA’s ranking of M&A legal advisors by volume in Spain, advising on 184 completed transactions. It has held the top position since 2017.
